Wildflower Soil™ Installation Guide

Effortless Meadow Establishment with Pre-Mixed Substrate & Seed

How to Install Wildflower Soil™

Wildflower Soil™ is Meadow Lab’s innovative, pre-seeded substrate for straightforward meadow installation, especially in larger landscapes. Here’s how to achieve beautiful results:

1. Prepare the Site

  • Remove existing grasses, weeds, and vegetation
  • Recommended: Use methods that do not disturb soil—sod-cutting, smothering, solarization, or, in select cases, herbicide application
  • Thorough prep is vital and may take weeks or months

Pro Tip: For more in-depth instructions, check out our Wildflower Meadow Site Preparation guide.

2. Clear Dead Vegetation and Thatch

  • Rake away surface debris to ensure Wildflower Soil™ is in direct contact with the earth and seeds can germinate effectively

3. Product Handling

  • Install within 24 hours of delivery
  • Wildflower Soil™ arrives in bulk bags (approx. 1 cubic yard, 700lbs) or other formats as specially arranged
  • Delayed installation can degrade seed viability

4. Application

  • Spread Wildflower Soil™ evenly using a rake or flat edge
  • Create a 1” layer of product
  • Ensure a consistent depth - seed density is carefully calculated to it

5. Pressing / Rolling In

  • For smaller plots: Press down by foot (“heeling-in”)
  • For large areas: Roll with a flat or ridged roller to minimize substrate movement

6. Watering

  • Water gently but thoroughly immediately after installation
  • Use a fine spray, avoiding water flow that could wash material away
  • Continue daily watering (as weather dictates) until germination is visible, and longer in summer
  • Do not allow substrate to dry out during establishment
